Medley of Media Announcements

Loyal readers know that December frequently represents an opportunity for me to purge my “editorial inspiration” file of newsworthy announcements. It must have something to do with my annual closet-cleaning initiative at home, when I venture into that lost wilderness for holiday decorations. Is it just me, or does anyone else have one — I have five — of those “Fibber Maggee closets” ?(Google it, Young Ones!) For some reason I carry that same annual task to work with the mantra: I saved it so it must be used!

Unlike my closet, the difference here is that this medley of media announcements carries value and each is recent.

Let's tackle these subjects chronologically:

CPP Expo

H.A. Bruno's Converting & Package Printing Expo, held October 15-17, improved its previous Las Vegas attendance when this year it was physically co-located with Pack Expo (sponsored by the Packaging Machinery Mfrs. Inst.-PMMI) at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The show seems to have worked out some first-time logistical problems from two years ago.

After extrapolating CPP's numbers from Pack Expo, the 23,960 total attendance of the combined events included 3,544 converting and packaging printing attendees. This represents a 28% increase in attendance over the 2005 Las Vegas show. Among the exhibiting materials and machinery exhibitors, Comco (a div. of Mark Andy) and Nordmeccanica were pleased with the full supply-chain concept that attracted top-level executive attendance. The shows will co-locate again Nov. 9-13, 2008, at Chicago's McCormick Place.

TLMI

On October 21-24, the Tag & Label Mfrs. Inst. hosted its annual meeting at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel on the Big Island of Hawaii. The theme this year — “Differentiate: It Makes All the Difference” — included presenters Mark Sandborn (motivational speaker, author, and president of Sandborn & Assoc.) and Sam Geist (speaker, facilitator, consultant, and author). Sandborn's presentation tackled how to lead and grow other leaders with capabilities in your workplace. Succeeding at these will result in growing your business. Geist engaged label converters by such challenging questions as the title of his new book: WHY? Should Someone Do Business With You…Rather than Someone Else. Geist offered new perspectives, differentiating strategies to find and keep customers, as well as how to increase staff productivity — all to enhance profitability.

The association also announced a new Press Guard Contest that's open to members and non-members alike. The objective is to solicit designs for a flexo press guard that will assist in preventing injury industrywide, to generate new ideas to advance current standards, and to tap into designs that may already exist. Entry deadline is Mar. 5, 2008, and guidelines for submission can be found on TLMI's website: www.tlmi.com.

On an affiliated note, TLMI and PFFC announce our team effort to produce a 75th Diamond Anniversary memoir in June 2008 that highlights the association's milestone efforts, growth, and future vision for the label converting industry.

Automation Fair

On November 14-15, I attended the 16th annual Rockwell Automation Fair held for the first time at McCormick Place West. This has to represent every supplier's dream to host its own private educational forum for manufacturing technology. Claimed the world's largest, free forum of its type, this show drew 13,000 attendees from 65 nations. More than 100 exhibits were featured to complement 85 technical sessions, hands-on training labs, and manufacturing industry presentations on key automation trends. Quite a show!

Partnerships

I'm especially pleased to announce key partnerships with TAPPI PLACE, which has officially selected PFFC as its preferred magazine of choice, and the Assn. of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters, and Laminators (AIMCAL). On an exclusive basis, AIMCAL has selected PFFC to feature its Economic Index on a quarterly publication basis, both on our website and in the magazine. This data will complement PFFC's own privately conducted and researched Critical Trends industry survey.
