European Conference

The European Committee of the Polymers, Laminations and Coatings Division will sponsor the 2001 European Polymers, Films, Laminations, and Extrusion Coating Conference. The event will occur on May 28-30, 2001, at the Barcelona Hilton Hotel in Barcelona, Spain. “This conference will be the most significant event covering polymers, films, and extrusion coatings that has taken place in Europe for several years,” said Erkki Laiho of Borealis Polymers Oy, who is Technical Program Chairperson.

The program will include information about the latest trends, applications, and technology influencing polymers, films, extrusion, and coating. The titles for the five sessions with their chairperson are Polymers/Raw Materials I, Karl Zuecher of Dow Europe S.A.; Polymers/Raw Materials II, Yves Trouilhet of duPont de Nemours Intl., S.A.; Processing/Converting, Ion Postoaca of Tetra Pak Converting Technologies AB; Applications/Environment, Otto Plassman of EC Erdoelchemie GmbH; and Machinery/Equipment, David A. Markgraf of Enercon Industries Corp. More than 30 speakers representing 13 countries will offer technical papers covering various aspects of packaging and converting. Laiho noted that the “wide representation of speakers from so many countries will provide a unique international flavor to ensure that registrants receive truly up-to-date technical information. The speakers are all recognized experts in their fields who will cover not only polymers and raw materials but also end uses and the demands of packages.”

The meeting will be especially helpful to technical and development managers, marketing and sales managers, plant engineers and supervisors, technical service staff members, and packaging personnel. “The included coffee breaks, lunches, and reception will provide excellent opportunities for networking among conference attendees and speakers,” said Laiho. He added, “A special opportunity is available during the afternoon of May 30 for an optional group visit to Comexi, SA, who is a manufacturer of printing, laminating, and slitting equipment.”

Technical papers include “New Oxygen Scavengers For The Packaging Industry” by Paavo Lehtonen of Bioka Oy, “Processing and Converting of Plastic Films Vacuum Coated With Inorganic Barriers” by Hans R. Naegeli and Wolfgang Lohwasser of Lawson Mardon Packaging Services, and “Sustainability Aspects In The Packaging Chain” by Matti Salste of Stora Enso Oyj. Chris Barton, Volkmark Mehnert, and Larbi Agdouche of ER-WE-PA, Davis Standard, will speak on “A Comparison of Blown and Cast Films,” and Ulrich Berghaus of Reifenhauser will discuss “Breathable Film Composites.”
