Boxes That Rock

The National Paperbox Association (NPA) has announced the winners of its Judge's Citation Awards, as well as the 2002 National Student Design Competition winners, in its 53rd Annual Packaging Competition of the rigid box and folding carton industries. Each judge on the panel selected one entry in the competition for special recognition.

Announcement of the Gold and Excellence Awards, in addition to the coveted “Best of Show” awards, is slated to be made at NPA's 85th annual meeting, which will be held June 21-25 at The Westin Nova Scotian, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

A Touch of Class
Judge Jim Trimm selected the Glominerals cartons, manufactured by All Packaging Co., Aurora, CO, for Caleel-Hayden LLC. The folding carton was developed for a new high-end cosmetic line. To create its classy appearance, All Packaging used two contrasting coatings to duplicate the customer's “glo” logo on the entire background of each carton. The dramatic effect was created by a unique two-step coating process, all done in one pass during printing.

“The sophisticated appeal of this package is a major part of the product's acceptance, and it's truly a winning package showcasing a winning product,” Trimm says.

Toast of the Town
Judge Barbara Wentz selected the Turi sampler box, manufactured by Wright Brothers Paper Box Co. of Florida, for Bacardi-Martini USA. Using a four-color process and UV coating, Wright Brothers created a rigid box from recycled chipboard and all-purpose litho paper. Sateen fabric was used to enhance the shelf appeal.

Wentz comments, “This set-up box demands attention; the colors are sophisticated and current, evocative of the personality of an upscale vodka whose target audience is similarly sophisticated and accomplished.”

Tea Anyone?
Utah Paper Box Co., Salt Lake City, UT, was selected by judge David Luttenberger for its Tazo travel tin carton produced for Starbucks. The package combines a traditional box style with the unique rigid window top. The process is done on a “pick and place” rigid window machine, which the company says is the first of its kind in North America. It reportedly enables the customer to view the product from the top and side. The strength of the rigid window also allows the product to be shipped to retail stores without assembly, the company notes.

“This package combines consumer trends, lifestyle choices, marketability, and a high-tech manufacturing method,” says Luttenberger.

Head of the Class
The National Student Design Competition recognizes and encourages college students in the packaging design field. Awards include the Gold, Silver, and Bronze in both the folding carton and rigid box categories.

In the folding carton category, Joe Galbreath of the Univ. of Akron took home a Gold award for the Porcellini package. For the Rigid Box category, the Gold award was presented to Candace Gustine, also of the Univ. of Akron, for the Tiger Chase Extreme package.

“The Student Design Competition is an excellent opportunity to enlighten packaging students of the broad range of industries that involve packaging and to give them a feel for what the up-and-coming trends are in these industries,” says packaging competition chairman Chet Baron of the Paul T. Freund Corp.
