RKW Sweden Films Suited for Food Packaging

FRANKENTHAL, GERMANY | RKW Sweden will present FPO films at the RosUpack exhibition June 14–17, 2016, in Moscow, Russia. The films, based on filled polyolefin (FPO), are said to be well suited for all kinds of flexible packaging applications, particularly in the food industry. E.g., FPO can be used as an aluminum-free wrap for butter, providing excellent barrier properties and improved tear resistance.

FPO is made from the polymers polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), to which company adds natural minerals in various degrees of fineness. Thanks to the usage of more than 50% minerals, FPO is said to provide excellent barrier properties to light, oxygen, and water vapor, leading to sustainable solutions with improved carbon footprint. Consuming less energy than aluminum, company reports, the material also features improved tear resistance and dead fold.

Films’ composition reportedly offers a paper-like soft touch and a matte look, and the improved stiffness yields excellent printing results for a strong shelf appeal and product differentiation. FPO has been approved for food contact by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European commission. Also be applied for pouches, bags, and as f/f/s films for increased product shelf life.
