Five Label Material Must-Haves for Market Growth

Label converters are experts at solving difficult problems. When a brand owner or contract packager approaches with an unusual or a never-been-done-before application need, converters deliver solutions. This ability to develop versatile, innovative label solutions is key to accessing scalable business opportunities.

But heading into 2026, the demand for high-performance labels across end-use segments is growing increasingly complex. Label constructions are being exposed to even more extreme environments, from sterilized test tubes to cold storage containers to chemical drums. These challenging use cases require advanced label stocks engineered for durability, adhesion and print integrity under stress.

For converters, highly specialized markets can represent areas for new opportunities. Healthcare and laboratory facilities are growing rapidly with the proliferation of independent labs, diagnostic centers and outpatient facilities. At the same time, regulatory requirements for the storage and transportation of hazardous materials are becoming more rigorous. Consumer markets are also driving label innovation with new packaging formats and rigid container designs.

Polymer-based synthetic label stocks are often used in many of these demanding applications. Yet even within this category, there are differences between the available options. Some materials may lack the heat tolerance for certain printing technologies or require special drying equipment and longer processing times. Others may be vulnerable to loss of legibility from abrasions during storage and transportation, become brittle in low temperatures or lose adhesion when submerged in water.

How can converters select materials that meet the diverse requirements of specialty labels while unlocking opportunities in new markets? Innovations in label technologies and materials are equipping companies with new tools to solve problems for their customers, such as improved compatibility with different printing processes, consistent on-press performance, enhanced durability during the label application process and long-term post-application label durability.

The good news is that these material solutions exist. Both label stock and material suppliers can help converters learn about the options and the trade-offs to make the right choice. Updates from suppliers can provide technical and sales teams with information about the latest label stock varieties and capabilities to ensure they can deliver the right solution for each unique customer need.

In this time of continued market uncertainty, supply chain challenges and raw material pricing fluctuations, choosing the right label stock supplier is essential. To meet their customers’ requirements, converters should also build relationships with material suppliers who not only provide versatile label substrates that perform both on press and after the pallets of printed rolls are shipped out the door, but who also maintain a robust pipeline of innovation. Access to new materials and technologies is critical for converters to stay competitive and seize new opportunities in a rapidly evolving marketplace.

Here are five qualities to look for when evaluating label materials that meet today’s toughest challenges and enable new opportunities for long-term growth.

1. Environmental Resistance

Labels used in manufacturing and healthcare applications must withstand a wide range of demanding conditions, including temperature variations, chemical exposure and abrasion that is often caused by sterilization procedures, refrigeration and handling operations. Failure to withstand these conditions can compromise safety, compliance and traceability. Labels with strong adhesion that resist peeling and degradation ensure that critical information remains legible and intact. In highly regulated industries where accurate labeling is essential, durability is paramount.

2. Conformability

From small-diameter cylindrical vials to flexible packaging, labels must conform to diverse shapes and surfaces without compromising adhesive performance. In these segments, labels must bend and flex without lifting, tearing or flagging around curved edges. The flexibility and dimensional stability of a label depend on the facestock’s structure. Facestocks with strong conformability and tear resistance provide the flexibility needed to adapt to container shapes while maintaining adhesion and readability.

Some synthetic materials can crack or delaminate in cold conditions, while others soften under heat. The right choice depends on understanding the geometry of the surface, the environment of use and the stresses the label will endure over time. Converters should also consider how facestocks interact with adhesives and coatings. Some materials are engineered with microporous structures or flexible polymers that allow adhesives to bond more securely, even on textured or low-energy surfaces.

3. Printability

Versatile substrates that are compatible with multiple print technologies help converters reduce inventory complexity while providing flexibility to serve a broader range of applications. For specialized applications, printability is directly tied to long-term legibility under demanding conditions. Converters must ensure that labels can reliably display variable data, barcodes, safety warnings and regulatory information across a wide range of environments, regardless of the printing technology.

It is critical to consider how different processing techniques affect performance. Some materials require additional topcoats or primers, which can make printed information more vulnerable to scuffing or scratching. Highly bondable label materials are useful for applications that require tamper-evident security, such as premium wine and spirits packaging and certificate of authenticity labels.

4. Customizability

Ongoing supply chain pressures are driving many converters to bring more material control in-house, sourcing facestocks, liners and adhesives directly. A facestock’s compatibility with different adhesives and coatings is fundamental for creating solutions tailored to specific markets. This versatility in customization allows converters to pivot quickly and capture opportunities in new verticals.

5. Performance

No single label stock meets every challenge. Substrates should be evaluated based on how well they deliver durability, printability, chemical resistance and adaptability for a given application. Performance considerations extend beyond the label itself, encompassing converting efficiency, ease of application, sustainability and long-term lifecycle performance. Choosing materials that optimize all of these factors helps converters maximize value.

In practice, no two use cases are identical. A blood bag label has vastly different requirements from a hazardous chemical drum, and both differ from a luxury consumer package. Advanced materials engineered for flexibility, durability and compatibility with a range of print technologies are enabling labels to do more than ever before. They allow converters to expand into markets that once seemed out of reach and deliver solutions that meet both regulatory requirements and consumer expectations.

Knowledgeable suppliers – partners who can understand these distinctions and recommend substrates that strike the right balance of performance characteristics – are a valuable tool in the converter’s toolbox. Effective performance relies on matching the right facestock, print technology, and adhesive system to the application’s conditions. Converters who embrace advanced materials and build supplier partnerships that prioritize research, development and collaboration will be best positioned to seize these opportunities and unlock growth in highly specialized markets.
