Static Beat: How To Use Electrostatic Fieldmeters

Electrostatic fieldmeters are useful and versatile tools for solving static problems. Static charging problems are challenging to diagnose because the

Static Beat: Prevent Winter Static

Static becomes worse in the winter when heating systems operate. Cold air holds less moisture than warm air. So, the relative humidity of heated air is

Static Beat: How To Take a Static Survey

Static can cause a variety of problems in film production, coating, converting, sheeting, and packaging operations. Charged surfaces attract dust. Static

Meech Strengthens International Presence in China

Meech Intl. continues to expand its global presence with the formation in China of a wholly owned subsidiary–Meech Static Eliminators (Shanghai) Co., Ltd

Static Beat: Choosing Passive or Active Ionizers

Static charges can be an annoyance that requires some attention, and sometimes static can be a serious threat to your operation. To solve a static problem,

Static Beat: Corona Treaters & Ionizers Compared

To prevent static problems such as coating defects, dust attraction, and sparks, static neutralizers may be installed along the film conveyance path.

How To Use an Electrostatic Voltmeter

This month, I am delighted to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Static Beat, which first appeared in the May 2009 issue of PFFC. For many, static

Measure Static Charge

Charges, electrons, and ions cause static problems. When chemically different materials touch and separate, one will have positive charge, and the other

Good Static!

While most static issues in the converting industry involve solving static problems, in other industrial applications, static charge plays an important and beneficial role.

For example, in 1907, Dr. Frederick G. Cottrell, a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, applied for a patent on a device for charging particles and then collecting them through electrostatic attraction — the first electrostatic precipitator. Cottrell first applied the device to the collection of sulfuric acid mist and lead oxide fume emitted from various acid-making and smelting activities. Vineyards in northern California were being adversely affected by the lead emissions [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrostatic_precipitator].

So, next time your cut sheets jam because the static level is too high, remember that the same static attraction is helping clean the air!

Static Beat: How To Measure Static

A winding roll on a slitter shows signs of high static. The crackling might be enough for your customer to notice. Will this roll be a problem? When is

Fieldmeter or Voltmeter?

I received an interesting email question. What is the difference between an electrostatic fieldmeter and a non-contacting electrostatic voltmeter? And, if I had to pick either one or the other, which one is more useful for solving static problems?

How Much Static?

Static is only one of many challenges in commercializing new products and in running production processes. How can we organize our information and prioritize our work so that each issue gets the attention it deserves, and no more? Analysis tools to drive data driven decisions and project prioritization concepts that have proven so valuable in managing operations should also be applied to static issues. To move ahead with on this, we need to establish a performance baseline that is acceptable, and identify maximum levels of static that are satisfactory.

How Static Bars Work

Static charge must be reduced on many new film products. The surfaces of multilayered webs formed by coextrusion, lamination, or coating are designed

Static, Be Gone!

Static charge accumulates on the surface of PE, PP, or PET films as they run through a coating, lamination, or converting process. Static charge also

Dissipating Static

Static becomes worse in the winter when the humidity decreases. What measurements are important to track static? Relative humidity (RH) is at the top

Welcome to the world of STATIC!

Thank-you for visiting ‘Kelly on Static.’ Here, I will share some fundamental concepts of static electricity, apply these concepts to real-world roll-to-roll manufacturing operations, and answer questions on electrostatic theories and applications. I’ll be sharing my thoughts on how webs become charged, how static charge causes problems, and how to dissipate charge to prevent problems.

How To Prevent Winding Roll Sparks

Film Charge Causes Winding Static

Valuable product is delivered to customers in wound rolls. Unfortunately, the wound rolls often contain product defects, dust particles, and static charge. To satisfy their customers, manufacturers work hard to eliminate defects, dust, and static.
