DFI's Flexo Tip of the Month: Stop Anilox Roll Scoring

BROADVIEW, IL | DiTrolio Flexographic Institute credits supporter Craig Shields, president and chief engineer of Graymills Corp., for the flexo training organization's tip of the month:

Most score lines on anilox rolls (irreversible damage that follows the circumference of the roll) are caused by debris caught between the doctor blade and the anilox. This debris is pressed by the blade into the roll, creating a groove that appears darker than the rest of the roll.

Luckily, this is easy to prevent. A fine mesh filter (60–250 mesh for normal application) will remove particles from your ink, both from dried ink and from roll degradation. A rare-earth magnet will remove metal shavings from your doctor blade or solvent supply.
