As of March 15, 2005, DuPont Teijin Films US branded PET polyester films increased by a minimum of $0.80/lb, Celanese Chemicals’ PVAc homopolymer and VAE co-polymers in North America by $0.03/wet lb. And acrylic and vinyl-acrylic emulsions by $0.06/wet lb.

UV/EB a Bright Spot in Economy

Recent shortages of acrylic acid exemplify the problem of raw material supply and its impact on the price stability. Last year has seen various price increases in raw materials, and this trend is continuing into this year. As a result, it is anticipated raw material price fluctuations will negatively impact UV/EB products.

Film Opens New Markets

Since pressure-sensitive labels and tapes—and other materials such as stamps—have become more sophisticated, the market for these materials has been expanding rapidly. In such product constructions, it has been common practice to apply a release coating, typically a silicone-based material, to the paper liner from which the materials are peeled or dispensed.

Klockner Adds Vinyl and Shrink-Label Films Capacity

Klockner Pentaplast of America has announced two capacity expansions at its Rural Retreat, VA, manufacturing facility. The first expansion is in its core business of rigid vinyl film calendering, expected to come online in July 2005. The second is an expansion of a tentering capacity for full body shrink-label films, expected to start in fall 2005.

Ticona Increases Price of its Polyester Products

Ticona, the technical polymers business of Celanese Corp., Kelsterbach, Germany, will increase the price of its polyester products effective on all shipments made on or after February 14, 2005. This increase reflects the continuing rise of polyester feedstock costs, currently at record levels.

Bemis Acquires Majority Ownership of Dixie Toga

Bemis Co. has acquired majority ownership of Dixie Toga, San Paulo, Brazil, one of the largest packaging companies in South America. Bemis acquired the voting common stock and 43% of the outstanding, non-voting preferred stock of Dixie Toga for approximately $250 million, financed with commercial paper.

Ampac Packaging Acquires Flexicon

Ampac Packaging, a producer of high-performance film structures for bags and food packaging—ranging from monolayers to nine-layer coextruded barrier films—has acquired Flexicon, a manufacturer of high-performance, flexible packaging materials for the pharmaceutical, medial, healthcare, chemical, food, and industrial markets. The amount was undisclosed.

Sun Chemical Forms New Business Unit, Sun Chemical Security

Printing ink and organic pigment manufacturer Sun Chemical has formed Sun Chemical Security, a new global business unit that will provide a range of products with incorporated security measures to print packages, documents, and currency. The unit will also market forensic security systems to ensure the authenticity of the products themselves.
