TLMI Honors Labels And Companies
NAPERVILLE, IL—Nine converter member companies of the Tag & Label Mfrs. Inst. (TLMI) won ten awards in the 15th World Label Assn. Awards Competition. The awards were presented at the recent TLMI Converter Meeting in Los Cabos, Mexico.
In the contest, the first-place winners in individual label competitions held by TLMI, the Japanese Federation of Label Printers (JFLP), LTMA, India, and FINAT are judged against one another in a variety of categories to determine the "world’s best labels."
TAPP Technologies, Langley, BC, Canada, won two awards: in the Offset Wine/Spirits category for its Nickel & Nickel Zinfandel label, and in the Offset Line category for its Pelino Vineyard Sangiovese entry.
Other TLMI members winning first-place awards included Logo-Tech, Fairfield, NJ, honored in the Letterpress-Color Process category for its Spiderman Foam Soap label; KimBells Pack, Quezon City, The Philippines, in the Offset Line & Screen Tone category for its Tanduay Rum 1854 entry; LSK Label, El Dorado Hills, CA, in the Flexo Wine/Spirits category for its Winston Hill entry; and McDowell Label & Screen Printing, Plano, TX, in the Flexo Cosmetics category for its Bronze Express label. Other first-place winners included Spectrum Label Corp., Hayward, CA, in the Non Pressure Sensitive Any Process category for the Kikkoman-Toasted Sesame Marinade label; Graphic Solutions Intl., Burr Ridge, IL, in the Innovative Use of Inline Procedures category for the 1.5 V Printed Battery label; and Dow Industries, Wilmington, MA, in the Flexo Line category for its Color Therapy Shampoo entry.
Spear, Mason, OH, won an honorable-mention award in the Screen Line category for its Kipling Light label.
Excellent Managing
Four TLMI converter member companies were awarded the Eugene Singer Award for Management Excellence, also presented at the meeting in Los Cabos. Awards are given in four categories, based on annual sales volume.
Stixon Labels, Albuquerque, NM, was honored for the first time in the "small company" category. "Winning the Eugene Singer Award is a great honor for us," said Beverly Chavez, Stixon president. "We are a family-owned, minority business, and we are proud to be recognized among our peers for our hard work and accomplishments."
Taylor Made Labels, Lake Oswego, OR, was honored in the "mid-range" category. The company first won this award in 1998. Taylor Made Labels was founded in 1982 and has grown to 72 employees. "It is truly an honor to be selected as a Singer Award winner," said Paul Taylor, president of Taylor Made Labels. "The Singer Award is a great benchmark for our industry, and our team is very proud to be recognized."
Consolidated Label, Longwood, FL, was honored for the third consecutive year, this year in the "medium" category. "Winning the Singer Award for the third consecutive year makes our employees very proud," said president Joel Carmany. "We celebrated our 20th anniversary in the label business in 2004, and it is quite rewarding for all of our long-term employees that we have achieved this level of success."
Belmark, DePere, WI, a seven-time winner of the Eugene Singer Award, was honored in the "large company" category. Chairman and founder Bruce Bell remarked, "The TLMI Singer Award is very special.
I have such respect for the membership that any time we can equal or exceed performance levels in the industry, it is a fine accomplishment. I’m happy for our employees, vendors, and our customers, all of whom made this possible."

Crain’s Ranks Seal-It "Tops"
FARMINGDALE, NY—Seal-It has been named by Crain’s New York Business as one of the Top 200 privately owned companies in New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester counties, and New Jersey.
Seal-It’s heat-shrink films are used by leading beverage, dairy, pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, and chemical manufacturers throughout the US and overseas. Operating out of two facilities in Farmingdale, the company prints up to ten colors in either rotogravure or modified flexographic.
Labels Monitor Time, Temp
STRONGSVILLE, OH—The Avery Dennison Industrial Products Div. says its TT Sensor active labels indicate time/temperature for products needing assurance of cold chain integrity.
The two-piece design comprises an indicator label and an activator label, reportedly making them easy to use in terms of application, activation, and readability. Monitoring does not begin until the activator label is applied, and no refrigeration of the labels is required prior to application.
Once activated, labels will change color from yellow to pink at a pre-determined rate based on temperature exposure. Because it is not enzyme-based, the label will deliver an accurate temperature abuse indication even when exposed to excessive heat, according to the company. Labels are available in a variety of formulations.

Raflatac Opens PA Terminal
FLETCHER, NC—Raflatac has opened a slitting and distribution center in northeastern Pennsylvania. The terminal, which began operations in January, reportedly will strengthen and expedite the company’s delivery capabilities to customers in New England, the Mid-Atlantic region, and parts of Canada.
