A Communication from the PLACE Div. of TAPPI

Providing practical information to the converting & packaging industries.

Siegel Assumes Board Position
During the recent voting by TAPPI members, the organization elected Jeffrey J. Siegel to a three-year term on its Board of Directors. Siegel and the other four newly elected directors will begin their terms of office following the TAPPI Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony on May 4, 2004, in Atlanta, Georgia. Siegel is president of Mica Corporation in Shelton, Connecticut, a manufacturer of aqueous primers for extrusion coating for the flexible packaging industry.

Siegel received his Bachelor of Science degree from Ithaca College and management training from UST Corp. in Boston, Massachusetts, where he became a branch manager and corporate officer. He joined Mica Corporation in 1986 in financial management and subsequently served as operations manager and vice president. He became president in 2000.

A TAPPI member since 1987, Siegel has been an active member of the Extrusion Coating Committee of the PLACE Division. He has held numerous positions on that committee and served as the Extrusion Coating Committee Chairman in 1993-1994. Siegel was chairman of the PLACE Division from 1998-1999. He has also been a member of the Technical Operations Committee of TAPPI and is currently a member of the Operating Committee of the Board of Directors. Siegel has been a frequent speaker at TAPPI conferences and short courses in the United States and Europe.

In 1994, Siegel received a Best Session Award for his presentation entitled “Extrusion Coating Processing” at the Polymers, Laminations and Coatings Conference. In 2002, he received the Leadership and Service Award and the Andreas Ahlbrandt Prize from the PLACE Division in recognition of his contributions to the organization.

Discussing his election, Siegel said, “I am honored to have been chosen to join the leadership team of TAPPI. As a member of the PLACE division for sixteen years, I have enjoyed the benefits of our organization and have made many friends along the way. The Board of Directors guides the overall policy of the organization. To that end, I will endeavor to do what is right for the whole while making sure that the needs of the PLACE Division are met. Those who are members of PLACE and especially those who help to manage its many successful activities should be proud of their work and know that our small division is very important to the TAPPI leadership.”

Siegel also noted that “we must reach out to younger professionals and the companies for whom they work. In so doing, we should look to international partners and position ourselves as a truly global organization. I will continue to promote the important traditions and values of TAPPI members and will seek ways to make TAPPI more relevant to the daily work lives of all its members.”
